About the R3Data Security and Standards Security In developing an online backup service R3Data looked at the needs of a business and then the tools (in this case the UK business internet) to design an integrated backup solution to meet the needs of small and medium sized businesses. The solution has been engineered to address the most common operating systems and applications used within small, medium and even large businesses use on a daily basis and that are critical to the organisations survival. Ever staggering, but hardly changing with time, statistics continue to prove that 80% of businesses suffering total data loss will cease trading as a direct cause of the data loss in less than 3 years of the loss. The remaining 20% will have seen little or no growth, a significant fact when the economy continues to develop and grow. So much effort is put into rescuing the business and then surviving. Security of your data is maintained at all times, there are three elements to access your data; your username (which unlike a lot of systems is case sensitive), your password (which is also case sensitive) and your encryption key (which only you know and cannot reset). Without all three components you cannot gain access to your data. If you forget your user name or password they can be reset, if you forget your encryption key your data is as good as erased. One critical point so many people miss when they look at online backup is how long it actually takes to move data from their offices to a remote location; a company with 25 employees could easily take in excess of one month to migrate their desktop computer data without even touching their fileserver. The same problem is then reversed when it comes to restoring their data because a laptop has been stolen, or the server has crashed, a week can easily be lost waiting to download your entire servers last backup. R3Data Online Backup uses a different approach, with server and high capacity backups we can do the initial backup online, and we will take as long as anyone else. However, as part of the silver and gold service we ship an external hard disk onto which the first complete backup is performed at speeds hundreds of times faster than your broadband internet connection will ever handle. One call to a central number and the courier collects the disk and returns it to our data processing suite. The data is then loaded directly to the backup server and within 24 hours of your data arriving at our processing suite we will have moved your backup data onto the backup server and changed your profile to enable your scheduled backups to begin. From now on your backups will be automatic and will only include new or changed files. In the event of a disaster we extract all your data from the backup server and return it to you on an external hard disk ready for you to restore the data to your new server. An important factor here is that all data is encrypted before it leaves your computer and only YOU have the key. Loose this key and you cannot get access to ANY of your data. Standards There are two levels of business exclusive service from R3Data, Silver (single site backup) and Gold (replicated backup on two sites). As to which option you go with is your choice, and depends upon your view of the probability of both your site, and the R3Data site losing data simultaneously. If you are happy that the likelyhood of this occurring is absolutly minimal, then the Silver Standard is for you. If you need gilt-edge protection, the Gold Standard gives the added protection of your data being stored at two separate R3Data locations Options for adding extra services are limited as so much is included within the core license, including Exchange, MsSQL, Oracle, Lotus Notes and MySQL. Platform support for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Server 2003 (where applicable both 32bit and 64bit), Mac OSX 10.2 and later, and software is available also (with limited support) for Linux and Unix. License options are available for multiple computers of different types (for example Windows 32 and 64 bit and Mac OSX) within one subscription plan. For laptop users where only data backup is required there are options for multiple backup sets. As standard 30Gb of space is allocated which in reality is often up to 60Gb of Office type documents (pictures, sound and video cannot be further compressed) is suitable for companies with up to 25 employees. It is possible to increase the licensed capacity at any time. The only other backup option is to supply Exchange Mailbox User Licenses, enabling individual Exchange users data to be backed up and restored allowing restoration of individual contacts or emails from the backup without the need to restore the entire system.
